Obaro part of the Agri North-West Young Farmer Conference

Obaro was a proud sponsor of this year’s Agri North West Young Farmers Conference. The event took place on 12 April at Uurpan Safari Lodge in Schweizer-Reneke. The theme this year was Change, Innovation & Entrepreneurship – the key to success for every farm.

Several speakers addressed the farmers in attendance, including Agri NW President Willem De Chavonnes Vrugt, who expressed a greeting-message during the conference. Gideon van Zyl, Chairman of the Young Farmers Committee, encouraged young farmers to focus on factors within their control and to transform it into opportunities. Dr Herman van Schalkwyk, Chief Executive Officer of Suidwes Landbou and main sponsor of the conference said that change, innovation and entrepreneurship form the key to success on every farm. Lastly, Marnus Milempire, latest investor on the International TV programme, Shark Tank and owner and founder of the Accountancy firm, The Beancounter, motivated the young farmers with his speech.

The three Young Farmer of the Year finalists were announced during the dinner. The finalists were Janna Du Rand, Pieter Ernst and Dawie Rothman. Dawie Rothman of Brits was announced as Young Farmer of the year 2019. Dawie has been farming for the past 20 years on the farm MA Rothmann & Sons Farm in the Brits area. His current focus is cattle, wheat crops, soybean, as well as vegetable crops such as beetroot, carrots, spinach, cabbage, onions, tomatoes, peppers, salad and sweet potatoes. He is particularly involved in the Brits Agricultural Association, the Brits Young Farmers Association, as well as the training of emerging farmers in the community.

Dawie has now gone through to the National Young Farmer of the Year competition. “We each have a role to play in agriculture. It is our responsibility to develop agriculture so that we can build the country. Everyone’s vision is an important component to moving forward to ensure that we have something to leave behind for future generations. Congratulations to Dawie, Obaro is proud to call you one of our farmers.” said Nic Bronkhorst, Obaro Managing Director.
